How we assess and treat back pain
Your first visit starts with a conversation about your pain, your work and your activity. Dr Damien then checks how your spine and pelvis are moving using the Gonstead approach: looking at your posture, feeling how each joint moves, and arranging x-rays only if they're needed.
He'll explain what he finds before any treatment starts. Treatment usually involves specific, gentle adjustments to the joints that aren't moving well, along with exercises and advice to help you stay on track.
What you can do at home
- Keep moving gently. Short, regular walks usually help more than bed rest.
- Change position often if you sit for long periods.
- Try the exercises for lower back pain
See your GP or go to hospital straight away if back pain comes with numbness around your groin or buttocks, changes to bladder or bowel control, weakness in your legs, fever or unexplained weight loss, or follows a serious fall or accident.
Common questions
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No. You can book directly. If your GP has given you a Chronic Disease Management plan, bring it along.
assumed: Medicare CDM accepted: assumed, confirm with the clinicHow many visits will I need?
It depends on what's causing your pain and how long you've had it. Dr Damien will explain a plan at your first visit and check your progress as you go.
Will I need an x-ray?
Only if your history or examination suggests one would help. If so, we'll refer you to a local imaging clinic. X-rays are bulk billed where eligible.

Most people find adjustments comfortable. You may hear a click, which is just gas releasing from the joint. Some people feel a little sore for a day, like after exercise.
