What chiropractors do
Chiropractors assess and treat problems with the spine, joints, muscles and nerves, such as back pain, neck pain and some headaches. The main treatment is the adjustment: a quick, specific movement to a joint that isn't moving well. Most chiropractors, including Dr Damien, also give exercises and practical advice on posture, activity and everyday habits.
How your spine and nerves work together
Your spine protects your spinal cord, and nerves leave it between each pair of vertebrae to reach the rest of your body. When a joint in the spine is stiff, irritated or not moving well, it can cause pain and tightness in the area and sometimes along the path of a nerve, such as down a leg or arm.
When to see a chiropractor
- Back or neck pain, stiffness, or pain after an awkward movement
- Some headaches that seem to start in the neck
- Joint pain and niggles from sport or work
- Discomfort during pregnancy
If your symptoms point to something chiropractic can't help with, Dr Damien will tell you and suggest you see your GP or another health professional.
Training and registration
Chiropractors in Australia complete a university degree of around five years and must be registered with the Chiropractic Board of Australia through AHPRA. Dr Damien uses the Gonstead method, which is known for a careful, detailed assessment before any adjustment, and specific adjustments only where they're needed.
