What is the Gonstead method?
The Gonstead method is a way of assessing and adjusting the spine developed by American chiropractor Dr Clarence Gonstead. Its focus is on finding exactly which joints aren't moving well before adjusting anything, then adjusting only those joints.
How Dr Damien assesses your spine
He combines several checks rather than relying on just one:
- Looking at your posture as you stand, sit and move
- Feeling each joint to see how it moves and whether it's tender or tight
- Checking skin temperature along your spine with a small hand-held instrument
- X-rays, only if needed, to see the alignment of your spine and rule out other problems
How the adjustments feel
Gonstead adjustments are specific and usually done in a seated or side-lying position, or on a special table. They're quick and precise, and most people find them comfortable. Dr Damien will explain each step before he does it.
A short history
Dr Clarence Gonstead began practising in the United States in 1923. With a background in mechanical engineering, he studied how the spine works as a structure, and his method is now taught at seminars around the world. Dr Damien has attended Gonstead seminars and conferences every year since graduating.assumed: 'Every year since graduating' assumed; the live site says 'annual Gonstead conferences'
